De Minaur sets up Shanghai quarterfinal with Zverev
Alex de Minaur has taken a giant stride towards clinching another ATP Finals berth after roaring into the last eight of the Shanghai Masters.
Alex de Minaur advanced to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters, defeating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4. This victory moves de Minaur into seventh place in the standings for the end-of-year ATP Finals, surpassing Novak Djokovic and Frances Tiafoe, who have been eliminated in Shanghai. De Minaur will face world number one Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals.
Despite a hip flexor injury that threatened his season, de Minaur has defied expectations, defeating a dual grand slam semifinalist and climbing the rankings. Zverev, who will be the year-end world number one, defeated Alexander Bublik 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1) to reach the quarterfinals. In their previous meeting, de Minaur prevailed in two Laver Cup encounters.
Despite an ankle issue, Zverev expressed satisfaction with his overall performance and his progress in managing his body.
