Darren Maule on breaking the MC stereotype

East Coast Radio Breakfast Show host Darren Maule has been honored with the Live Announcer of the Year award at the South African Voiceover Awards in Sandton, further showcasing his career beyond his well-known radio persona. Holding over two decades of experience, the award recognizes Maule's contributions to live event hosting, directing, and moderating, often overlooked due to his comedic radio presence.

In an industry where his comedic reputation sometimes hinders corporate and government bookings, Maule expressed gratitude for the recognition and the challenging nature of securing such opportunities.

The South African Voiceover Awards feature a judging panel led by Dr Fiona Ramsay and celebrate excellence in the voice industry. Maule described the Live Announcer of the Year category as a testament to the skills needed to engage an audience in real-time, emphasizing timing, presence, and quick thinking. Despite his extensive experience, Maule faced skepticism from some clients regarding his suitability as a host for formal events.

He believes that a successful live host combines structure, professionalism, and the ability to incorporate humor and improvisation when appropriate.

For Maule, being an engaging host goes beyond merely reading a script; it involves playing a crucial role in ensuring the successful execution of months of planning on the day of the event. He expressed his commitment to delivering memorable experiences while acknowledging the trust placed in him by various businesses and organizations.

Beyond the stage, Maule actively engages with aspiring broadcasters and performers in schools and universities across KwaZulu-Natal, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in pursuing a career in voiceover.

As he prepares to undertake a new venture in Dubai, hosting the comedy MC role at the Kings & Queens of Comedy at the Dubai Comedy Festival, Maule's recognition highlights his versatility and dedication to the live announcing profession.
