At least 4 killed, over 40 injured as Peshawar-bound train derails in Punjab's Multan district

On Tuesday, a Peshawar-bound train, the Rehman Baba Express, derailed near Sher Shah Railway Station in Multan district, Pakistan. The incident resulted in at least four deaths and over 40 injuries. Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed four fatalities, while the federal government inspector of railways, the inquiry officer, stated that the death toll might be higher.

Among the injured were 13 minors. The train was reportedly traveling at 100 kilometers per hour when the derailment occurred. Train driver Rizwan Abbas recounted the event, describing how the signal seemed clear and the train suddenly felt a push before coming to a halt. He claimed the train was in working order. In response, Abbasi directed authorities to provide top medical care to the injured and compensation to the deceased and injured, as per Pakistan Railways insurance policy.

Replacement trains and buses were arranged for the affected passengers, and the Commercial Department was on high alert to facilitate their travel. Pakistan Railways also set up information desks at major stations to assist passengers. The incident comes amid a string of train derailments over the past year, raising concerns over maintenance and negligence within Pakistan Railways.
