Anwar calls for stronger federal-state cooperation under National Covenant framework

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the necessity of enhanced federal-state collaboration within the National Covenant framework during the 150th Meeting of Menteri Besar and Chief Ministers, which he presided over. The proposed covenant, highlighted in Budget 2027, aims to promote equitable and balanced development, foster inclusion, and safeguard public welfare.

Anwar, who concurrently serves as Finance Minister, underscored the significance of aligning development strategies with regional demands, prioritizing public service enhancements, infrastructure growth, state economic bolstering, and initiatives that directly benefit citizens. Moreover, the meeting delved into the realm of cybersecurity, with Anwar stressing the urgency of implementing post-quantum cryptography to shield national digital infrastructures from emerging threats.

In addressing transboundary haze concerns, Anwar urged Indonesia to promptly implement stringent actions against indiscriminate burning, as the haze poses health risks, particularly to schoolchildren, and disrupts educational activities. As of the afternoon of October 13, 22 regions across the nation registered unhealthy Air Pollutant Index levels, leading to the suspension of classes in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, and several districts in Selangor, Pahang, Sabah, and Sarawak the following day.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced the closures via social media, noting that schools in the remaining states and districts would proceed as scheduled.
