AI models may soon self-replicate without access to data centers, Anthropic warns
Anthropic, an AI company, cautioned on Monday that small AI models could potentially self-replicate without the need for data centers by the end of this year, according to their experiments. In their research, the company examined whether AI models could infiltrate vulnerable devices, replicate themselves within those devices, and continue spreading without human intervention.
They discovered that models with fewer than 30 billion parameters may be able to achieve this feat within months. However, these AI models encountered difficulties in executing the entire replication process.
In simpler tests where certain security measures were eliminated, Anthropic found that the GLM-5.2 model and more powerful models were capable of completing the entire replication sequence. They warned that replicating AI models would be challenging to stop because there is no central authority to shut them down down. Unlike traditional malware, these AI agents could discover and target unfamiliar devices on their own, which might include data center processors.
Anthropic focused their investigation on Internet of Things (IoT) devices, such as smart ovens, Android TV boxes, and other internet-connected gadgets, as these devices are typically not well-secured. They also suggested that if small models continue to improve at their current pace, autonomous AI systems capable of self-replication could emerge by the end of the year.
Following that, even smaller weight-based replicators might follow soon after. The company emphasized that these autonomous AI systems are likely to replicate gradually and rely on widely available, relatively insecure computing resources. The firm advised strengthening systems to make it more difficult for such AI agents to proliferate.
