Sensex Bleeds At 548 Points, Nifty Slips Below 22,400 As Oil And Yields Weigh

Indian equities experienced a decline on October 12, as foreign investor selling, rising bond yields and tensions in West Asia dampened market sentiment. The Sensex dropped 547.65 points, or 0.76 percent, to 71,924.68, while the Nifty 50 fell 157.10 points, or 0.70 percent, to 22,363.35. The dip came after an initial positive opening, with inflation worries and global uncertainty eroding investor confidence.

Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer at PL Capital, explained that the selling was driven by higher bond yields, foreign institutional investor outflows, geopolitical tensions and weak overseas cues. Profit-taking contributed to increased volatility. While the rupee's recovery provided some relief, persistent concerns over elevated yields and inflation continued to cloud the market outlook.

Kasat advised investors to focus on fundamentally strong businesses and to stagger investments until there is greater clarity in earnings visibility and market participation.

Sectoral performance was mixed, with media stocks leading the gains as the Nifty Media surged more than 4 percent. Real estate advanced 0.63 percent, auto stocks increased 0.60 percent and pharma surged 0.25 percent. Public sector banks underperformed, falling 1.31 percent, while the IT sector declined 1.14 percent. Metals dropped 0.55 percent, and private banks slipped 0.52 percent.

Among the top gainers in the Nifty were Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Bajaj Auto, BSE, Bharat Electronics, Cipla and TMPV. On the losing side were Apollo Hospitals, ITC, Tech Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Max Healthcare and Hindalco.
