Russian interior minister arrives in Pakistan on four-day visit

Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokolstev arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a four-day visit, according to a statement by the interior ministry. This marked the first instance of a Russian interior minister visiting Pakistan. The purpose of Kolokolstev's visit was to hold "important meetings" with the Pakistani leadership, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing mutual cooperation.

Upon his arrival in Islamabad, Kolokolstev was received by Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry. The Russian minister's visit was initiated by Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. This diplomatic move was influenced by the strengthening of economic ties between the two countries, driven by mutual necessity.

In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin had emphasized the mutually beneficial nature of Russia's relations with Pakistan, highlighting their close ties within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the largest regional organization in terms of economic, technological, and human potential. Earlier in July, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk referred to Pakistan and Russia as "natural allies," stressing their importance as strategic partners in the areas of economy and energy.

Since Western sanctions related to the Ukraine conflict, Russia has been seeking alternative energy outlets, while Pakistan has been searching for more affordable fuel sources to reduce national import expenses. This shift culminated in 2023, with Pakistan officially integrating Russian crude oil into its energy portfolio.
