Russell Brand goes on trial to face rape and sexual assault charges

British comedian Russell Brand commenced his trial on Monday at Southwark Crown Court in London, facing charges of rape and sexual assault. The first day of jury selection concluded the proceedings, with the trial scheduled to continue on Tuesday. Brand, who is currently on bail, exited the courthouse alongside his wife, Laura Gallacher, their hands joined. Earlier, he entered the building with a contingent of security personnel and Gallacher.

The 51-year-old comedian has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. The allegations pertain to six women and incidents that allegedly occurred between 1999 and 2009. The trial is projected to last up to 10 weeks.

During earlier hearings, prosecutors outlined the charges against Brand, alleging he raped a woman in a hotel room at a Labour Party conference, forcefully grabbed the breasts of a TV worker and coerced her into a sexual act in a restroom, and engaged in inappropriate kissing and groping with a radio station employee. Brand is recognized for his provocative stand-up performances and struggles with substance abuse.

He gained prominence in the early 2000s, hosting television shows and his own BBC radio program. He also appeared in Hollywood films such as "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek."

In recent years, Brand has distanced himself from mainstream media, relocated to Florida, and amassed a substantial online following through videos that blend wellness advice, conspiracy theories, and discussions on his religious beliefs. The Associated Press refrains from naming victims of alleged sexual violence and British law enforces the protection of their identities from media scrutiny for life.
