Qatar dialogue highlights opportunities and risks of digital technology for children

Doha, Qatar - The Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, in partnership with Qatar University's Early Childhood Center, recently hosted a dialogue session titled "My Childhood in a Digital World." The event aimed to examine the opportunities and challenges posed by technology use among children and explore ways to create a safe and balanced digital environment.

Specialists and stakeholders in childhood, education, and digital safety gathered to discuss the impact of rapid technological advancements on children's lives, the potential benefits of digital platforms for learning and creativity, and the associated risks. Salem Al Mansouri, a senior consultant at the Qatar National Commission, emphasized that human development forms the foundation of progress, beginning with children.

Al Mansouri highlighted the challenge of enabling children to use technology consciously and responsibly, promoting learning, creativity, critical thinking, and innovation while safeguarding their psychological and social well-being. He stressed the importance of collaboration among families, educational institutions, and authorities to establish a culture of digital safety and encourage ethical technology use from an early age.

The event coincided with the celebration of Arab Children's Day, underscoring the shared responsibility to protect children's rights and provide a safe environment that supports their learning, development, and creativity. Dr Diala Hamidi, Director of Qatar University's Early Childhood Center, noted that rapid digital transformation emphasizes the need for dialogue and the exchange of expertise on using technology to support children's learning and creativity while strengthening digital safety.

She emphasized the importance of empowering children to become informed and creative users of technology, placing their well-being and overall development at the center of efforts to prepare them for a future increasingly shaped by technology and artificial intelligence.
