The town of Pedreguer in Spain recently hosted an international meeting to address gender inequality in basketball and prevent teenage girls from quitting the sport. Representatives from five European countries - Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Portugal and Turkey - gathered from September 28 to 30 to discuss equal opportunities for girls in basketball, as part of a European initiative called EQUAL, or Equal Play: Breaking the Basketball Glass Ceiling.
The project aims to tackle the issue of girls dropping out of sports during their teenage years. During the seminar at Pedreguer's Casa de Cultura, participants presented a training program designed to make basketball more inclusive for young female players. The initiative is funded by the European Union's Erasmus+ Sport programme.
Pedreguer's sports officer, Jordi Pons, shared the town's history of developing women's basketball and the growth of participation among women and girls. The event also included cultural experiences, such as traditional dancing and local refreshments, and participants engaged in a demonstration of pilota valenciana, a traditional ball game from the Valencian Community.
