Nobelpreis-Vergabe: Nobelpreis-Finale: Wirtschaftspreis wird verkündet

The final announcement of the Nobel Prize will take place today in Stockholm, at around 11:45 AM, revealing the recipient of the Economics Prize in memory of Alfred Nobel. It will be interesting to see if a woman is honored this time, as only three women have been awarded this prestigious prize out of the 99 recipients so far. The Economics Prize has historically been the least frequently given out, with only women receiving it in the past.

In the past week, Nobelist laureates in the categories of Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Peace have been announced. Among the three Medicine laureates, two are German researchers, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel. The renowned Literature award went to Canadian poet, translator, and essayist Anne Carson this year. The Peace Nobel Prize was awarded to South African jurist Navanethem Pillay for her efforts against genocide and human rights.

The Economics Prize, unlike the others, does not trace its origins to Alfred Nobel's will and is therefore not officially called a Nobel Prize. It has only been awarded since 1969. So far, only one German Economics Prize laureate has been bestowed this year - Bonn scientist Reinhard Selten (1930-2016), who shared the award in 1994 with John Nash and John Harsanyi for their groundbreaking contributions to non-cooperative game theory.

The Economics Prize, like all other Nobel Prizes this year, comes with a prize money of twelve million Swedish Krona - a million more than in previous years. The awards ceremony will be held on December 10th, Alfred Nobel's death anniversary, in Stockholm. This year marks a milestone for the Nobel Prizes, as the first award was given 125 years ago.
