Jangan bebankan ‘angsa emas’ negara dengan keputusan politik, kata Hamzah

Hamzah Zainudin, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition, warned the government against assigning the golden goose of national institutions to political decisions. These organizations, such as Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), and the Welfare Funds Group (KWAP), should be allowed to carry out their respective duties without being forced to absorb the financial burden of government decisions that may harm their financial standing.

Speaking during the 2027 Budget, Hamzah claimed that the government makes political decisions but lets these institutions bear the consequences. He appealed for the "golden goose" of the nation to continue its business, citing Petronas' significant dividends paid to the government: RM40 billion in 2023, RM32 billion in 2024, RM27 billion in 2026, and RM32 billion in 2027.

The Petronas CEO is investing in strategic projects, including LNG Canada Phase 2 and developments in Suriname, Turkmenistan, and Penang, requiring substantial funds. Hamzah also referenced the Prime Minister's announcement to phase out Petronas in the construction of 10 affordable housing units in Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Rizab area.

Hamzah emphasized the need to allow these "golden goose" institutions to operate independently, with their financial decisions based on returns, not government announcements. Concerning TNB, Hamzah questioned the government's decision to increase electricity consumption allowances from 600 kilowatt-hours (kWj) to 800 kWj per month, which he believed would cost the company RM150 million.

He also questioned KWAP's involvement in some development initiatives, as the institution is not a bank and its mandate should be to provide safe returns for its shareholders.
