James Callaghan was a British Labour Party politician who held all four great offices of state, becoming Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979. Born in Portsmouth, Hampshire on 27 March 1912, he was the only person in British history to achieve this feat. James, the younger of two children, had an elder sister named Dorothy Gertrude Callaghan, born in 1904.
Their father, a Royal Navy chief petty officer of Irish descent, passed away in 1921, leaving the family in poverty. Dorothy Callaghan lived until 1982, having been raised in the Baptist faith after their father abandoned Catholicism to marry their mother.
