Google Fitbit Edge: What to Expect From Google’s Next Fitness Tracker

Fitbit built its reputation on lightweight fitness trackers that made it easy to monitor steps, heart rate, sleep, and workouts without wearing a full smartwatch. But Google’s growing focus on the Pixel Watch has left longtime Fitbit users wondering whether…

Google Fitbit Edge: What to Expect From Google’s Next Fitness Tracker

Google has unveiled the Fitbit Edge, a new tracker that succeeds the Fitbit Air, which debuted in May. The Fitbit Edge boasts a wide, pill-shaped AMOLED screen, protected by Gorilla Glass 3, offering 46% more display area compared to the 2023 Charge 6. Weighing 11.5mm, the device is crafted from precision-crafted aluminum and features nano-molding technology for enhanced GPS precision, 40% greater than the Charge 6.

A dedicated altimeter is included for elevation tracking. On the right side, a large tactile button facilitates control during swimming sessions. The device is dust and water-resistant with IP68 / 5ATM ratings. Beneath the surface, sensors include an accelerometer, altimeter, ambient light sensor, far-field skin temperature sensor, gyroscope, heart rate monitor, multipurpose electrical sensors (ECG), and red and infrared sensors (SpO2).

The Fitbit Edge relies on the same magnetic USB-C charger as the Fitbit Air, providing a 5-minute charge for a day's battery life, or a full 90-minute charge. With a week's battery life when the always-on display is disabled, and around 2 days with it enabled, the Fitbit Edge is compatible with both Android and iOS platforms. Its battery can be replaced with a newly introduced mechanism and four additional band designs.

Operating on a Fitbit operating system similar to the Air, the Edge offers a larger screen that enables a richer interface inspired by the Pixel Watch 5. The device showcases a dozen or so watch faces, including analog and digital options. Users can customize complications via the Google Health app and access various tiles by swiping left or right from the watch face, with customizable order.

Quick start options cater to different exercises, while focus metrics, sleep, heart, cycle health, weather, timers, and music controls are available. Music controls work with any app on the paired device, while Android users can enjoy quick reply features. Google Maps navigation is also included, though Google Wallet is absent due to the absence of NFC.

The Exercise app supports over 50 types of activities with real-time guidance and workout views. The Fitbit Edge connects to equipment with heart rate broadcasting and features upgraded automatic activity detection powered by AI, learning users' habits over time to support more than 100 activities.

The Fitbit Edge can sync with compatible equipment, and users can operate the Fitbit Air, Edge, and Pixel Watch 5 on the same account with seamless switching. The device is priced at $179.99 for pre-orders, with availability on October 27. A Stephen Curry Special Edition, featuring a custom band, is available for $219.99.
