Democrat rips 'insanely corrupt' raid on Omar's home

Federal immigration agents carried out a predawn raid on the home of Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday, according to US media reports. The search was conducted following a criminal fraud investigation into Omar's immigration paperwork, which was completed by her late father when she was a child, Fox News reported, citing unnamed sources.

Omar has consistently denied allegations of wrongdoing, describing them as false and politically motivated. A department representative confirmed to The Associated Press that Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice, stating that this enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.

It is unclear whether the Justice Department or Omar's representative has commented on the matter at the time of this report. Born in Somalia and brought to the US as a child to escape the civil war, Omar became a US citizen at the age of 17 in 2000. She was elected to Congress in 2018 to represent Minnesota's 5th District, which encompasses all of Minneapolis.

Omar is seeking re-election for the seat on November 3. A vocal critic of President Donald Trump, Omar has frequently been a target of his attacks. He has previously suggested she should leave the country and even called for her and fellow Democrat Rashida Tlaib of Michigan to be "institutionalized" after they criticized his remarks during the State of Union address.

Trump has also recently targeted Abdul El Sayed, who is running for a US Senate seat in Michigan and would be the first Muslim elected to the upper chamber of Congress if elected. Trump has used anti-Muslim language in online attacks against El Sayed, referring to him as a "jihadist lunatic."
