5 Horror Movie Locations to Get You in the Halloween Spirit
Here’s one fan’s guide to visiting some of the genre’s fabled filming locations, from “The Shining” to “Friday the 13th.”
Victoria Pedretti delivers a heart-wrenching performance as Nell Crain, one of Netflix's most tragic characters. Haunted by her family's darkness and the spectre known as the Bent-Neck Lady, Nell's life is a nightmare of fear and sorrow. The series' true terror lies not in the ghosts, but in the fractured family dynamics and the inability of the siblings to heal from the loss of their loved ones.
Grief is a constant companion, slowly tearing the characters apart and compelling them to forget the painful memories they desperately wish to retain.
The series misleads viewers with its haunted house premise, but it is ultimately about the Crains' unspoken burdens. Olivia Crain, the mother, played brilliantly by Carla Gugino, loses her grip on reality and her children. Her husband, Hugh, makes a desperate decision to save his children, but his silence breeds resentment that haunts his adult children.
The house, rather than instilling fear, feeds on the Crains' pre-existing emotional wounds. The finale's resolution offers hope as Hugh finally reveals the truth to his children, giving Luke a future while Olivia finds peace. The show delivers grief and catharsis, leaving a lasting impact on the viewer's heart.
