2027: CJN cautions judges, lawyers over political cases

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has cautioned judges and lawyers to uphold integrity while handling political disputes as the country nears the 2027 general elections. During a special session of the Supreme Court, Kekere-Ekun emphasized the judiciary's responsibility to handle electoral disputes with impartiality and fidelity to the law, stating that court decisions would be subject to public scrutiny.

She warned against conduct that could undermine public confidence in the judiciary, such as forum shopping, which involves deliberately choosing a court perceived to be more favorable to a particular party or filing multiple suits with substantially similar claims. Kekere-Ekun also urged lawyers to exercise greater professional responsibility when dealing with political and electoral disputes, particularly when related cases were already pending in other courts.
