US Congress Seeking To Force Ban On Russian Fuel Purchases — Details

Republican Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick intends to force a vote on a bill banning any purchases of Russian fuel. The proposed legislation, titled the "Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act," will be introduced as a bipartisan measure to block Russian oil imports. Fitzpatrick plans to push the bill through a discharge petition, a process that circumvents House leadership if a majority of lawmakers sign it.

This comes in the wake of a recent announcement by President Trump regarding an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Russian diesel fuel, accompanied by a temporary license from the US Treasury Department allowing its supply through April.

Earlier that day, Fitzpatrick spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, vowing Congress and the American people's full support for the Ukrainian leader. Fitzpatrick emphasized that the bill will be forced to a vote through the discharge petition and will likely pass with an overwhelming margin. The objective is to prevent the US from engaging in fuel purchases from Russia, thereby avoiding any complicity in Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has criticized the US President's decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel fuel, calling it shameful and complicit in Russia's Ukrainian war.
