Trump announces immediate energy ceasefire between Russia, Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump declared an immediate "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday, claiming both sides had agreed to cease attacks on energy infrastructure. President Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, though there was no confirmation from either Ukraine or Russia regarding the agreement or its immediate effect.

The proclamation read, "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine... Please do not break it!" The statement followed a tense exchange between Ukraine and Russia over strikes on each other's energy facilities, with Ukraine targeting Russian oil refineries and Russia continuing strikes on Ukrainian power and energy facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had initially said he was unaware of Trump's announcement but would accept an energy ceasefire if Russia agreed. Zelensky also expressed readiness to accept the truce if negotiated by Trump with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The truce comes amid ongoing tensions between Trump and Zelensky over their respective policy approaches to the conflict, which has seen energy infrastructure targeted repeatedly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Details of the scope and mechanics of the "energy ceasefire" remain unclear pending official confirmation from Ukraine and Russia.
