The ‘Swallow’ warning: Why unlicensed Botox operators are renting Costa del Sol luxury villas for just 24 Hours
They book high-end hotel suites, blast Instagram with bargain deals, and send you the treatment address just 60 minutes before […]
Malaga doctors are sounding the alarm over a dangerous trend of unauthorized Botox operators appearing in the Costa del Sol and disappearing just as quickly as they arrive. These "fly-in" operators advertise on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, book treatment slots for just 24 hours, and then vanish without a trace.
They are not licensed doctors and operate outside of authorized health centers, often in unregulated locations such as hotel rooms, luxury villas, and even garages. The Aesthetic Doctors Association of Malaga (Medesma) has seen a sharp increase in these unauthorized treatments along the Costa del Sol, with some operators setting up in well-known five-star hotels and other unsuspecting venues.
Patients are often given only a short notice of the appointment location, making it difficult to seek follow-up care if complications arise.
One case involved a patient who suffered a facial abscess after receiving treatment in a garage operated by a fly-in operator. Another woman received Botox injections to treat teeth grinding, resulting in facial paralysis that made her smile sideways. She discovered the practitioner was a nurse, not a doctor, after realizing the treatment took place in an unregulated clinic.
Medesma has been investigating this issue, and in one recent operation, they seized 700 vials of botulinum toxin from a property in San Pedro de Alcantara. In another case, hidden cameras captured a woman about to be administered botulinum toxin in a flat, highlighting the dangers of these illegal practices. Medesma warns that illegal Botox products can be purchased online from South Korea or China without proper cold-chain controls, posing a serious risk to patients' health.
To protect themselves, patients should verify the practitioner's professional registration number, confirm the clinic's health authorization and U.48 aesthetic medicine unit, and be wary of overly generous promotions.
