Drone strike by Sudan paramilitary kills 41 near Ethiopian border, rights group says

On Friday, a drone strike by Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Blue Nile region killed 41 people, according to the Emergency Lawyers rights group. The attack targeted a displaced persons camp in the Abu Shandi area, near the border with Ethiopia. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed shock at the reports, noting that most of the casualties were women and children.

Sudan has been embroiled in a power struggle between the army and the RSF since 2023, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths and over 14 million displaced individuals. The conflict has also sparked one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with millions requiring medical assistance. The Sudanese army controls central and eastern regions, while the RSF, headquartered in Darfur, governs areas in the south.

Both entities have been accused of employing drone attacks. OCHA emphasized that the region targeted on Friday had been under continuous assault in recent weeks, displacing thousands of civilians and placing many more at risk.
