DGC: Osun NAWOJ demands greater investment in girls’ education, health, protection

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Osun State Chapter, has urged the government and other stakeholders to enhance investment in the education, health, and protection of the girl child in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child. Chairperson Abisola Ariwodola and Secretary Oluwaranti Ojewumi emphasized that girls are the foundation of every society, and their progress significantly impacts the development of families, communities, and the nation.

While acknowledging progress, the association highlighted challenges such as teenage pregnancy, child marriage, gender-based violence, girls out of school, and digital exclusion as obstacles limiting the potential of girls in Osun State.

NAWOJ called for increased funding for girls' education from primary to tertiary levels, emphasizing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as vocational skills development. The association also demanded stronger enforcement of laws protecting girls from sexual abuse, child marriage, and other forms of violence, along with digital inclusion programs to equip them with technology skills for future employment opportunities.

They advocated for economic empowerment of parents and caregivers to alleviate financial pressures that often force girls to abandon their education.

NAWOJ pledged to increase media visibility for positive stories about girls to inspire future female leaders and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting girls' rights and welfare by using its media platforms to amplify their voices and advocate for policies that promote their well-being. The association concluded by stating, "When you empower a girl, you empower a nation. Let us all work together to secure the future our girls deserve."
