A new Google TV Streamer with notable upgrades is reportedly on its way, though no specific launch date or pricing has been disclosed. According to a source close to the situation shared with 9to5Google, the updated device will retain a similar design to the original model, albeit being slightly narrower. The current Google TV Streamer measures 6.4 inches x 3 inches x 1 inch (16.3 cm x 7.6 cm x 2.5 cm), and the new version is expected to incorporate microphones.

This addition will enable users to issue voice commands or AI queries by simply saying "hey Google," eliminating the need to rely on the remote control. Presence sensing is also rumored to be included, which could trigger the screensaver to load as the user enters the room and display more detailed information such as the time and weather.

The updated model may feature a faster chipset and increased storage capacity, with reports suggesting more than the current 32GB for apps and files. Additionally, the future device could include two extra shortcut buttons on the remote, alongside the existing Netflix and YouTube icons. These potential enhancements appear appealing to current users who have retained the older Chromecast with Google TV despite its age.

Despite its limitations, the device remains a capable streaming option, comparable to the original Google TV Streamer. If the upgraded model offers improved performance, a larger storage capacity, and a more smart speaker-like functionality, it might prompt a reconsideration of an upgrade. However, pricing will undoubtedly be a significant factor, as the current model recently saw a price increase to $149 in the US.
