Williams heroics and Mokoena strike end Pirates' reign as Sundowns claim MTN8 crown
Tebogo Mokoena's early goal and a late Iqraam Rayners penalty delivered domestic glory for Miguel Cardoso's side, denying the Buccaneers an unprecedented fifth consecutive crown.
Mamelodi Sundowns secured their fifth MTN8 title by defeating Orlando Pirates 2-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, ending their long wait for silverware in the competition. Tebogo Mokoena opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a well-placed finish after a clever backheel assist from Thabang Matuludi, while substitute Iqraam Rayners sealed the victory with a penalty in stoppage time.
Despite Orlando Pirates' efforts, including a penalty miss and a crucial save by Sundowns' goalkeeper Tebogo Mokoena, the Buccaneers could not equalize. The win marks Sundowns' first MTN8 title since 2021 and their fifth overall, while Pirates end their four-season streak of consecutive titles.
