Vinay Kumar begins coaching journey as Karnataka begin Ranji Trophy campaign Andhra

Vijayawada, a place steeped in cricketing history, has once again become the starting point for a new journey. R Vinay Kumar, Karnataka's last Ranji Trophy champion, is embarking on his full-time coaching career. Karnataka begins their Ranji Trophy campaign against Andhra on Sunday, marking a fresh beginning for both the team and Vinay.

R Smaran, who is set to captain the senior side for the first time, is described by Vinay as a promising leader. The absence of key players like Devdutt Padikkal and Smaran, due to national-team commitments, has left Karnataka's batting lineup weakened. The pace department also suffered a significant blow, losing four of their frontline quicks because of injuries. Vinay sees this as an opportunity to gauge the strength of the bench.

With the departure of Padikkal for India A duty, the Karnataka team relies on the experience of KL Rahul, Karun Nair, and Mayank Agarwal. Smaran, who scored a half-century and a century against J&K recently, aims for consistency. Against Andhra, led by Ricky Bhui, Karnataka holds a good record, having won three and drawn two of their previous five matches.

However, the hosts are expected to utilize their home advantage, with a blend of experience and young talent. Karnataka's spinners, spearheaded by leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal, are crucial in the dry conditions of the Mulapadu stadium.
