Instagram comment-to-DM automation: the limits you design around

"Comment PRICE and I will send you the list" looks like the simplest automation there is. A keyword, a direct message, done. I build DOS AI (dosai.pro), where businesses set up AI assistants for WhatsApp, Instagram and Telegram, and this feature ended up shaped almost entirely by what Instagram will not let you do. Here are the limits and what we built around each. You cannot write first, and a…

Instagram's automation feature allows businesses to set up AI assistants for managing comments and direct messages on its platform. However, there are several limits that dictate how this feature can be used. First, businesses cannot initiate a conversation on Instagram. Either the user or a bot must start the conversation through a direct message or a comment.

The business can send a single private reply to a comment, but after that, they must wait for the user's response. To prevent spam, each reply is capped at 1000 bytes, which amounts to about 500 letters in Cyrillic or 500 characters in English. Businesses are also required to provide at least two different replies to avoid being flagged as spam.

Instagram imposes hourly ceilings on the number of public replies and direct messages that can be sent. If a post goes viral and exceeds these limits, the excess replies are queued and sent when the ceiling resets, up to 7 days after the initial comment. If a reply cannot be sent due to a temporary error or revoked access, it is not dropped but instead queues for later delivery.

A user has 24 hours from their last interaction to respond. After this window, the only way to reply is through the Instagram app. This is why appointment reminders, which require a reminder a day ahead, do not work on Instagram.

Businesses can also set keyword rules to automatically respond to specific terms in comments. These rules take precedence over AI-generated responses. There is also a rule that allows the assistant to answer genuine questions under posts, but this costs the owner money and is limited to 60 questions per hour.

Finally, owners can restrict replies to followers only. When a follower receives a message, they are shown a button to reply. Non-followers are sent a message asking them to follow the account first before being able to reply. This feature also warns owners of Instagram's anti-spam rules, which prohibit trading a follow for a reward.
