GNAT pushes for clear implementation procedures of teachers’ conditions of service

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is urging the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to establish clear procedures for implementing teachers' conditions of service. GNAT President Prosper Tachie emphasized that without a defined process, agreed-upon benefits risk being unfulfilled for years.

Speaking on JoyNews ' Newsfile, Tachie stated that implementation has been a persistent issue in previous agreements, with benefits often left unaddressed. He warned against settling for merely the substantive document while leaving procedural matters unresolved for extended periods. GNAT seeks the authorities to outline how teachers would access the benefits specified in the agreement, he added.

The suspension of the nationwide strike by pre-tertiary teachers followed engagements with the Labour Minister and the Council of State, and the government's commitment to paying promotion-related arrears to over 51,000 teachers by October 16. Promotional arrears, along with payments for professional development allowance and digital support allowance, are expected in November and December, respectively.

Tachie stated that the strike suspension is temporary, and discussions on outstanding provisions of the collective agreement will continue. Teachers are scheduled to return to classrooms on October 12.
