The National Automative Design and Development Council (NADDC) has announced that ministries, departments and agencies across Nigeria must now procure all vehicles exclusively from local assemblers or their authorized retailers. This mandate forms part of the recently implemented 'Nigeria First Policy,' which aims to reduce the country's reliance on foreign-assembled automotive products.
NADDC Director-General Joseph Osanipin made the announcement at a press conference in Abuja alongside the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP). He emphasized that decades of reliance on foreign vehicles have strained foreign exchange reserves, displaced local jobs, and stifled the growth of domestic manufacturing.
Under the new policy, any vehicle procured by government entities will require a traceable Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) verified through the NADDC. Unlawful procurement of foreign-assembled vehicles will result in immediate regulatory sanctions, including blacklisting and license revocation.
The BPP Director-General, Dr Adedokun, highlighted that the Nigeria First Policy will drive industrialization, generate employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth.
