Delhi, October 10, 2026: On Saturday, opposition leaders, activists, and journalists endured detentions amid heightened security ahead of a major protest at Jantar Mantar. The event targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged electoral roll irregularities. Notable detentions included CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Over 40,000 police and security personnel were mobilized to thwart protesters from assembling at Jantar Mantar. Detentions extended beyond Delhi, with Tushar Gandhi in Mumbai and Manish Sisodia in Chandigarh also arrested. Journalists, including Ayush Tiwari of Scroll, Ashwine Kumar Singh of Newslaundry, and Rahul Charas and Hritik Joshi of Navbharat Times, reported being detained as well.
The widespread arrests raised questions about restrictions imposed on those seeking to participate in the protest.
