A walk through Sibu’s precious peat swamp forest

Welcome to Bukit Lima Nature Reserve, a leafy pocket of forest located on Sibu's doorstep. Covering an area of 301 hectares, this reserve is a protected peat swamp forest situated approximately 20 minutes from the city center. Despite being logged decades ago, the reserve retains substantial trees and lush vegetation, thanks to the care of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation. It boasts over 40 species of forest trees, 39 bird species, and eight mammal species, though these may have been resting during your visit.

The reserve is easily accessible, and an information board explains its significance: peat swamp forests once covered 12% of Sarawak's landmass, but only a fraction retains its natural forest cover today. Two wooden boardwalk loops, totaling 5.7km, allow visitors to observe the forest up close while protecting the habitat. The main loop is 3.2km long, with an additional 2.5km extension for those seeking more activity.

Building and maintaining these boardwalks is a significant undertaking. During this writer's visit, replacement planks were on display, showcasing the effort required to keep the trails in good condition. Signs instructed visitors to walk instead of run, ensuring the trails remain safe and undamaged.

Distance markers every 50 meters provide a helpful guide, and viewing towers offer a unique vantage point overlooking the reserve and Sibu's town center. However, preparation is essential for a comfortable outing. Visitors should bring sun protection, plenty of water, insect repellent, and comfortable footwear with good grip. A One Stop Centre with facilities is available at the northern entrance for those who need it.
