This photographer captures everyday life in war torn Ukraine – the pictures are beautiful and poignant

Dara Petrova, a photographer originally from Ukraine, has been documenting the everyday lives of those living in the war-torn country through her lens. In her project, CIRCLE, Petrova moves beyond the typical images of violence and instead brings the viewer into the intimate moments of Ukrainian citizens.

Born in Izmail, Ukraine, Petrova and her family were forced to flee to Paris due to the conflict. Now, she captures the essence of the people she meets in Ukraine, exploring the delicate balance between loss and connection.

The subjects of CIRCLE are ordinary people going about their daily lives, even in the midst of conflict. Petrova's photographs highlight how the environment influences individuals and how they create new forms of solidarity, endure hardships, fall into depression, or find love for one another.

Petrova does not shy away from the harsh realities of war. She interacts with soldiers, survivors, and those who have been injured, capturing their stories and experiences. From a young soldier who shared his photos of life on the front lines to an 87-year-old grandmother who refuses to leave her home, Petrova's lens brings a local perspective to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

As the project progresses, Petrova documents the lives of those who have been affected by the conflict in various ways. She captures the resilience and strength of the Ukrainian people, even as they face unimaginable challenges. Through her powerful images, Petrova invites viewers to empathize with the people of Ukraine and to recognize the beauty and humanity that exists amidst the turmoil.
