Tanzania: Orphan Programme Helps Young Mothers Rebuild Lives

[Daily News] Tanzania -- THE Ilula Orphan Programme (Tanzania) (IOP) is supporting girls and young mothers who became pregnant at an early age to rebuild their lives, acquire skills and pursue their future goals despite the challenges they have faced.

Tanzania has launched the Ilula Orphan Programme (IOP) to aid young mothers and girls who became pregnant at a young age, helping them regain confidence and become self-reliant. Managing Director Edson Msigwa informed the NGOs Week Exhibition that the program currently supports six young mothers residing in a residential facility, while others receive assistance while living with their families. Beneficiaries range in age from 14 to 18 and face circumstances that could jeopardize their future.

During the initial year, the program offers training and psychological support to help these young women cope with challenges and enhance their capabilities. Apart from this, IOP is also implementing social and economic projects in Iringa Region and Kilolo District to improve the lives of children, young people, women, and older people.

The organization operates a children's center for 45 boys and girls and has a sponsorship program supporting children from pre-primary to secondary school. Around 616 children are benefiting from the education support programme at various levels, providing them with opportunities to access education and better learning environments. The program also provides lunch and helps access to agricultural inputs in six primary schools in Kilolo District to ensure school attendance and improve learning among the children.
