St Barnabas marks 100 years of service

St Barnabas Anglican Church in Osu celebrated its 100th anniversary, marking a century of evangelism and Anglicanism in the area. The centenary event took place on Sunday under the theme "100 Years of Evangelism and Anglicanism in Osu." Parish Priest and Archdeacon of Accra East, Venerable John Antonio Tello Nelson, addressed the congregation, highlighting the church's significant contributions to the growth of Anglicanism in Ghana.

The Venerable Nelson pointed out that St Barnabas played a crucial role in establishing and expanding several Anglican churches across the country, including St Paul Aragon, St Bartholomew, Holy Gabriel, St Timothy, Transfiguration, and St Agnes. Furthermore, the church has been instrumental in training and developing lay pastors, evangelists, church organists, and children's service teachers, as well as forming clergy.

More than 15 priests have undergone training at St Barnabas and are currently serving within the Anglican Diocese. The church's outreach efforts extend beyond worship, focusing on community involvement through youth ministry and evangelism. St Barnabas was founded on September 16, 1926, by four members: Lucas Randolph, Josephus Christian Taylor, Nii Boi Acquarsen, and Nesbit Cochrane.

Initially, services were held in an old carpenter's shed at Barnabas House before the church was named St Barnabas in 1928 and relocated to its present site in 1931.
