South African judge Navi Pillay wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 has been conferred upon Navanethem Navi Pillay, a prominent South African jurist. Pillay, who is of Indian Tamil descent, served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announced that Pillay was honored for her dedication to advancing peace and international law. This year's award marks the 125th anniversary of the prestigious prize.

Born in Durban, South Africa, under the oppressive apartheid regime, Pillay grew up in a family of Indian Tamil origin. She pursued a career in law, becoming a formidable advocate who challenged the deeply entrenched discrimination, segregation, and exclusion prevalent during that time. Her commitment to universal legal principles and her unwavering moral compass guided her throughout a distinguished career.

Pillay's legal journey began with defending Nelson Mandela and other activists fighting against apartheid. She later served as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, presided over the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and was appointed to the International Criminal Court. Throughout her career, Pillay's experiences have shaped her approach to human rights, as evidenced by her service on the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Today, Navi Pillay continues to be a respected jurist, currently sitting on the International Court of Justice in a case accusing Myanmar of genocide. The Norwegian Nobel Committee commended her ongoing efforts in upholding international law and promoting peace worldwide.
