No Man Is an Island

In a world where artificial intelligence (AI) can perform intellectual tasks, the importance of contributing to intellectual communities diminishes. AI can write code, generate software, and even prove theorems, making the need for human involvement in these activities obsolete. Consequently, the motivation to learn, contribute, or even engage in intellectual discourse dwindles.

Software engineering, once a field that required rigorous, systematic thinking and a deep understanding of compilers, type systems, and logic, has been transformed by AI. The discourse surrounding software engineering has become shallower, narrower, and repetitive, with people talking about "prompts", "harnesses", and "loops" instead of the more complex technical concepts they once discussed. The loss of human capital formation is evident, as there is little incentive to learn coding when AI can do the work for you.

Moreover, contributing to the commons of software engineering has become increasingly pointless. Before AI, individuals could publish open-source code, write blog posts, and create tutorials to share knowledge and inspire others. However, with AI, the concept of a shared human project to contribute to has disappeared. Private gardens of code can be endlessly expanded with AI assistance, but there is no longer a need to leave the garden and engage with the broader community.

This phenomenon extends beyond software engineering to other domains of intellectual activity. In mathematics, for example, AI can now prove theorems, write papers, and even tutor students. The future of mathematics may involve individual students and practitioners, but without a living community of mathematicians, the intellectual practice may wither.

In essence, AI has disrupted the intellectual landscape, rendering private intellectual activity less meaningful and diminishing the significance of contributing to intellectual communities. Without the shared body of work and the motivation provided by an external intellectual community, intellectual pursuits lose their purpose and value.
