New scientific studies should be guided by previous research for better results, says former IISc director
Former Indian Institute of Science (IISc) director P. Balaram advocated on Friday for new scientific studies to be influenced by previous research findings to achieve superior outcomes. During the inauguration of the 11th International Cell and Gene Therapy Conference (CGTCON 2026) in Vellore, Balaram emphasized that extensive research in various healthcare specializations has been conducted over the years.
He urged young scientists to utilize this established knowledge as a foundation for their innovative research. Balaram underscored the significance of in-depth and thorough research on blood disorders, stating that scientific investigation would be crucial in devising treatments for such ailments. Earlier, CMC Director Biju George recalled that Mammen Chandy, a former hematologist at CMC, introduced hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) as a curative therapy in 1986.
However, he noted that only 25% of families can identify a suitable matched sibling or family donor for such transplants. The CGTCON 2026, set to conclude on October 10, will exhibit advancements in numerous disease areas such as haematological, ocular, diabetic, metabolic, neurological, cardiovascular, and dermatological disorders.
Additionally, the conference will address topics like organoids, disease modeling, nucleic acid delivery technologies, and the industry, manufacturing, and regulatory elements of advanced therapeutics. The event aims to bolster collaborations among clinicians, scientists, industry partners, and regulatory authorities.
