MoCI strengthens consumer protection rules for driving schools

Doha, Qatar - The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has emphasized the importance of driving schools in Qatar adhering to contractual requirements for providing driving training services, as part of efforts to strengthen consumer protection and regulate service provision. The target audiences are the driving schools and all consumers planning to attend training at these schools.

Under the new requirements, driving schools must provide consumers with a clear, written contract outlining the terms and conditions of the training service. No fees should be collected from consumers unless they are covered by a written contract. The contract must also specify the actual start date for the training to ensure consumers have clear information about when their training begins.

Consumers must also be able to obtain their permit number issued by the General Directorate of Traffic, which provides them with essential information related to their driving training and licensing process. The requirements apply to all driving schools operating in Qatar and are in line with Consumer Protection Law No. (8) of 2008.

To allow driving schools time to comply, the Ministry granted a one-month grace period starting from the date the requirements are notified. During this period, schools are expected to regularize their status and ensure their contracts and procedures comply with the specified provisions. Following the grace period, the MoCI will conduct field inspection campaigns to verify compliance and ensure driving schools adhere to consumer protection regulations.

The Ministry urged driving schools to review their contractual practices during the grace period to ensure compliance. Consumers can report violations or seek assistance by contacting the MoCI's call center at 16001 or through the Ministry's official social media accounts. These measures underscore MoCI's commitment to enhancing transparency in consumer transactions and protecting consumer rights.
