Mike Ditka, legendary NFL player and coach, dies at 86

On Friday, the Chicago Bears announced the passing of their legendary head coach and tight end, Mike Ditka, at the age of 86. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Ditka, a member of the Hall of Fame, also had a successful career as the head coach of the Bears, leading them to a Super Bowl victory in 1985. Following his tenure in Chicago, Ditka spent the last three years of his coaching career with the New Orleans Saints.

In a heartfelt statement, Ditka's family mourned his loss, describing him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. They emphasized that while the world recognized him as a "Hall of Fame football player, legendary coach, and leader of the Chicago Bears' Super Bowl XX championship team," they knew him as the "heart of our family."

Tributes have been pouring in for Ditka. Former Bears player Jarrett Payton of Walter Payton's son, referred to Ditka as the "heartbeat of the '85 Bears" and expressed disappointment that "Chicago won't be the same." ESPN's Adam Schefter highlighted Ditka's revolutionary impact on the tight end position, noting that before him, tight ends were primarily viewed as blockers.

Ditka, however, transformed into a significant threat at the position, setting the record for the most receiving yards for a rookie tight end that stood for 63 years until it was broken in 2024 by Las Vegas Raiders star Brock Bowers.

Barstool Sports' Big Cat expressed his admiration for Ditka, describing him as the "definition of swagger and aura" and lamented that there are no more players like him.
