Toronto Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews expressed his genuine happiness for his former teammate Mitch Marner's journey to the Stanley Cup Final in the previous season. Despite Marner's team ultimately losing to the Carolina Panthers, Matthews conveyed his admiration for Marner's performance. The two had spent nine seasons together as teammates on the Maple Leafs, and Matthews noted that their bond remained strong, regardless of which team they were playing for.
Matthews aims to lead the Maple Leafs to the playoffs this season, following their lack of success last year, and his confidence in doing so is evident in his comments before the season. Injuries hindered Matthews during the previous campaign, as he only appeared in 60 games. The initial weeks were particularly challenging for him due to persistent pain, but Matthews expressed satisfaction with his recovery and progress by the three-month mark.
A healthy Matthews, Matthews believes, could significantly contribute to the Maple Leafs' improved season.
