FAAN plans 25-day Owerri Airport runway closure for repairs

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced a temporary closure of the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Nigeria, for essential repairs and resurfacing works. The closure is expected to commence on October 20, 2026, and last for around 25 days, pending final confirmation.

The decision to close the runway comes following the degradation of the surface, including the emergence of potholes and significant surface cracking, which have worsened due to recent heavy rainfall. FAAN has stated that the rehabilitation process will include pavement repairs, crack treatment, and resurfacing of the affected sections to ensure the runway's safe operational status, especially considering the anticipated surge in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season.

Moreover, the repairs will also encompass an extension of the runway, enabling the airport to accommodate larger wide-body aircraft as traffic to the region grows. The primary aim of this expansion is to enhance passenger comfort and provide a more seamless travel experience.

FAAN has urged passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure to maintain communication with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and alternative arrangements. The authority has also pledged to keep relevant stakeholders informed and promptly communicate the confirmed closure dates and reopening timeline as soon as they are finalized.
