ECOM-SMS Ghana launches ‘Agriculture Our Future Clubs’ to address threat of ageing farmer population
As part of efforts to inspire the next generation to embrace agriculture and secure the future of the sector, the Sustainable Management Services (SMS) under the auspices of ECOM Ghana has launched the Agriculture Our Future Clubs initiative in basic schools within its operational areas.
The Agriculture Our Future Clubs initiative, launched by the Sustainable Management Services (SMS) under ECOM Ghana, aims to inspire the next generation to embrace agriculture and secure the future of the sector. The program targets basic schools within the company's operational areas, exposing pupils to opportunities in agribusiness, science, technology, processing, marketing, and entrepreneurship.
So far, the initiative has been rolled out in 40 basic schools across 12 districts. The launch was held in Old Edubiase in the Adansi North District, where the Acting General Manager of SMS at ECOM Ghana, Emmanuel Baffoe-Bonnie, highlighted the growing concern of the ageing farmer population in Ghana. He pointed out that the average Ghanaian farmer is 55 years old, with the situation being even worse in cocoa-growing communities, where most farmers are over 50.
Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana's economy and national development, yet many young people do not see it as an attractive career path. The Agriculture Our Future Clubs initiative seeks to change this perception by raising a generation that understands agriculture and appreciates its importance.
