Bio-LNG could ensure Singapore’s energy resilience amid global disruptions: Tan See Leng

This needs to come alongside progress on decarbonisation, adds the minister

Dr Tan See Leng, Singapore's minister for energy, trade and industry, highlighted the potential of bio-LNG to ensure the nation's energy resilience amid global disruptions. Speaking at the Shell Powering Progress Together forum in Singapore, Dr Tan emphasized the importance of developing new energy solutions while maintaining a secure, reliable, and affordable energy supply during the transition towards net-zero emissions by 2050.

To this end, Shell and Singapore LNG Corp (SLNG) recently completed the first delivery and unloading of bio-LNG at SLNG's Jurong Island terminal, adhering to strict EU sustainability standards. The terminal is currently under expansion with a third jetty, which will increase its LNG bunker reload capacity to about two million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and accommodate break-bulk and small-scale LNG operations.

Moreover, Shell launched the LiveWire Singapore program in partnership with Singapore's national trade association for startups, Action Community for Entrepreneurship (Ace.SG). The program aims to support promising Singapore scale-ups in sectors such as artificial intelligence, smart infrastructure, energy systems, and low-carbon business models, helping them transition from early commercial traction to sustained growth and expansion.

Dr Tan stressed the need for Singapore to strengthen its energy resilience while simultaneously advancing its decarbonisation efforts, investing in new technologies and capabilities within companies and individuals, and seeking partners willing to collaborate on these ventures.
