Why are more roofs not made of solar tiles?

Despite the potential benefits, solar roofs remain a niche product in the United States. The Solar Service of Colorado's Kate Collardson acknowledges that some people find solar panels visually unappealing, but a solar roof could be a better option, especially for historic buildings subject to strict heritage regulations. However, the Solar Service of Colorado faces challenges in implementing solar roofs due to their higher cost, lower efficiency, and complex installation process compared to traditional solar panels.

The additional time and paperwork required for solar roofs can burden roofing businesses, leading to increased prices for customers. Tesla's withdrawal from the solar roof market in August last year, following disappointing sales and a lawsuit over sudden price hikes, has further dampened interest in the technology. Other companies have also exited the market, but the Swiss company Freesuns is considering expanding its operations to the US.

Freesuns CEO Deborah Learoyd notes that manufacturing solar roof components in smaller batches limits economies of scale and standardization, making it more expensive to produce solar roofs. Moreover, the individualized engineering and installation required for solar roofs make them a less attractive option for many homeowners. Despite the challenges, solar roof supporters argue that they should not be compared directly to traditional solar panels but viewed as an opportunity to generate additional electricity from rooftops.

Advances like matrix shingling technology, which allows for electrical current to flow around shaded areas and reduces the visibility of silver wires, could help improve solar roofs' performance and aesthetics. However, the high cost remains a significant barrier, with most UK consumers finding solar roofs too expensive.
