UK airport e-gates to become passport-free and contactless by early 2027

UK airports have begun rolling out contactless e-gates. The technology allows eligible travellers to pass through without having to show their passports.

The UK government has commenced installing contactless border systems at airports across the country, signaling the end of the passport requirement for eligible travelers. Initially, the system is being piloted at East Midlands Airport in England, but the government has announced plans to roll out the technology at all major UK airports by early 2027.

Steve Griffiths, Managing Director of East Midlands Airport, welcomed the introduction of the contactless e-gates, stating that any technological advancement that simplifies the journey for customers is highly valued. Tests have shown that the new system is up to 25% faster than presenting a physical passport.

Phil Douglas, Director General of the UK Border Force, explained that the digital push builds upon the work done during the summer to extend e-gates to children aged eight and older, making life easier for families. The contactless system uses facial comparison technology to verify a traveler's identity. Upon arrival, passengers approach an e-gate, where their photo is taken and compared against verified immigration, travel, and passport information.

If all checks pass, the barrier automatically opens, completing the process. If additional verification is required, travelers will need to present their passport or be directed to a Border Force officer.

While the new system aims to streamline the border experience, travelers are advised to keep their passport with them at all times. UK government officials emphasized that Border Force officers will continue to monitor all e-gates and offer assistance throughout the process.

Currently, a limited number of contactless e-gates are operational at East Midlands Airport. However, the technology will soon be available at several other major UK airports, including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, and Stansted. The UK boasts over 290 standard e-gates at 15 air and rail ports, accessible to UK and Irish citizens, as well as travelers eligible for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK.

The ETA, introduced in February, allows officials to identify potential security risks before travelers arrive in the country.
