Steve Martin, Alison Brown, Dan Tyminski & Del McCoury Give This Lil Nas X Hit a Bluegrass Spin
Martin and Brown worked together on the 2025 album Safe, Sensible and Sane .
Renowned comedian Steve Martin, accompanied by his fellow banjo player Alison Brown, have enlisted fellow bluegrass legends Del McCoury and Dan Tyminski to perform a bluegrass rendition of Lil Nas X's hit song "Old Town Road." The collaboration also features Ronnie McCoury on mandolin, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, and Garry West on bass.
The version highlights the original song's country roots, revealing the absurdity of country radio's initial reluctance to embrace "Old Town Road." Martin expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that he had always envisioned "Old Town Road" through bluegrass eyes and was delighted when some of the best musicians in the genre agreed to collaborate.
Brown added that her challenge was to create an arrangement that would highlight the banjos without giving away the song too soon. The video for the cover, directed by David Shayne, is available for viewing.
