OpenAI updates ChatGPT with interactive graphics

OpenAI has introduced Intelligent UI, an innovative feature for ChatGPT that allows the AI chatbot to generate visual interfaces. This enhancement is set to roll out alongside the broader release of GPT-6 later this week. The primary goal of Intelligent UI is to make ChatGPT's responses more visually engaging, thereby improving user comprehension.

According to OpenAI, GPT-6 has been trained to generate responses using text, visuals, and interactive elements, with the arrangement of these elements based on the user's query. With Intelligent UI, ChatGPT responses can incorporate graphics, clickable buttons, forms, charts, and interactive experiences that are directly usable within the conversation.

The specific type of graphics used by ChatGPT will depend on the user's prompts. While ChatGPT will continue to provide text-based responses when this format is more appropriate, Intelligent UI enables the AI chatbot to generate interactive diagrams explaining complex concepts like bicycle design, or create graphs to illustrate economic indicators like GDP. Furthermore, it can also create interactive tools, such as calculators for splitting bills or projections for future retirement savings.

To enable Intelligent UI, OpenAI developed a library of components that its AI model can draw upon when constructing interactive visual content. GPT-6 was then trained to utilize these components to generate responses that are appropriate for various prompts, making design decisions such as how to organize information clearly, when to incorporate interactivity, and when a text-only response is sufficient.

ChatGPT's GPT-6 model was launched for paid ChatGPT subscribers in September, replacing the previous GPT-5.6 model. However, the rollout of Intelligent UI was not included in this initial release. This new feature will be accessible to users on ChatGPT's Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers starting from Wednesday, with the Free and Go tiers transitioning to GPT-6 and gaining access to Intelligent UI from Thursday.
