Mumbai Infra Update: BMC Demolishes 28 Structures For Delayed Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road Widening

Mumbai's Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has accelerated efforts on the long-pending widening of the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road (AGLR). In a recent move, the civic body demolished 28 structures near Jhunjhunwala College in Ghatkopar. This follows the removal of nearly 60 structures last year. However, the project still faces significant challenges, with around 250 affected structures situated on both sides of the road.

The 15.25-metre-wide road is being constructed alongside Ghatkopar (West) railway station to link Jhunjhunwala College with the AGLR. Simultaneously, the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) is rebuilding an 11-metre-wide rail overbridge, 216 metres long and 216 metres wide, which will connect the Golibar Road junction near LBS Marg with the Eastern Express Highway, featuring three lanes in each direction.

Despite the issuance of a bridge work order in 2022, encroachments along the proposed approach roads have hampered both projects. The initial completion target of the end of 2025 has now been shifted to June 2027. An official from N Ward mentioned that encroachments are being removed in phases, following rehabilitation arrangements for affected occupants.

Both projects are expected to alleviate traffic congestion in Ghatkopar and enhance east-west connectivity in the suburb. Additionally, the BMC's Pedestrian First campaign in South ward has cleared encroachments near D.G. Mahajani and Jerbai Wadia Road, removing 7 unauthorized shops, 15 temporary tarpaulin sheds, 2 unauthorized platforms, 4 abandoned material storage spots, and 20 hawkers.
