Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: A massive fire engulfed several shops in the crowded New Market area on Thursday afternoon, leaving over 15 fire engines and emergency responders scrambling to contain it. The blaze ignited at a popular chole-bhature shop, rapidly spreading to at least five other establishments, including mobile phone shops, a utensil store, and a clothing boutique.
Thick clouds of smoke rose nearly 25 feet into the air, visible from up to 2 kilometers away. Around 50 to 60 people who were inside the burning shop managed to escape outside to safety. Eyewitnesses reported that the fire began while workers were preparing bhature and quickly escalated, overwhelming the initial attempts to control it.
Despite the intense flames and thick smoke, the Hanuman Temple located just behind the affected shop remained unharmed due to a protective wall between the two structures. The exact cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.
