Ohio State's wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has continued to dominate opposing defenses throughout the 2026 season, leading to comparisons with NFL superstar Randy Moss. Smith has posted impressive numbers in his first five games, recording 44 receptions for 823 yards and nine touchdowns, which has propelled him into the Heisman Trophy conversation.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has remarked on Smith's impact, stating that defenders must be aware of his presence on every play, as he can strike fear into opponents at any moment. Smith's recent performances against Illinois and Iowa have solidified his status as a key offensive weapon for Ohio State. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has explained that Smith's ability to exploit coverage schemes means that teams must constantly adjust their defensive strategies, as Smith can consistently find open spaces on the field.
As Ohio State prepares to face Maryland on October 10, Smith will be a focal point for the Buckeyes' offense. However, the team will also need to address several injury concerns, including the question marks around Brandon Inniss, Devin McCuin, Phillip Daniels, and Leroy Roker III. The outcome of these injuries will undoubtedly play a significant role in Ohio State's preparation for the Maryland matchup.
