Ghana, Czech Republic explore deeper defence and security cooperation
Defence Minister Kenneth Adjei says proposed cooperation could boost local defence manufacturing.
Ghana and South Korea are set to strengthen their bilateral cooperation as they prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year. A meeting between Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama and South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung during a recent summit resulted in concrete outcomes in areas such as climate change, technology, digital innovation, and maritime security.
South Korean Ambassador to Ghana Mr Kyongsig Park stated that Korea looks forward to commemorating this milestone through meaningful events and engagements in celebration of the 50 years of friendship and cooperation. The Ambassador highlighted that Ghana and Korea share important values and experiences which lay a strong foundation for mutual understanding and a closer partnership.
Mr Park emphasized that Ghana, as a stable democracy and respected leader in West Africa, plays an important role in international affairs and is eager to work closely together in multilateral fora and address shared global challenges. The Ambassador also noted the significant progress in bilateral trade over the years, with trade increasing approximately 38-fold since diplomatic relations were established in 1977.
Korean companies have been increasingly present in Ghana, particularly in manufacturing and fisheries sectors. In March, Korea and Ghana signed a Framework Agreement for Cooperation on Climate Change, which will pave the way for climate-related projects by Korean companies in Ghana once it enters into force. These projects could contribute to climate change mitigation efforts, job creation, new economic opportunities, and increased government revenue for Ghana.
Korea's development cooperation with Ghana covers various sectors such as agriculture, health, education, environment, and several others. The Korean government has allocated approximately $32 million this year for Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects in Ghana. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, conveyed President Mahama's best wishes and goodwill to Korea, its President, and people.
